29/365: mascarpone & nutella calzone

this was yesterday's dessert.
when i saw david rocco make this on food network i just had to do it too!
you may find the recipe here.

since i have a sweet tooth, i would probably change the ratio to 2:1 nutella & mascarpone.

this is the perfect combination ever. david rocco knew what he was doing for sure!

ps: mascarpone can be a little pricey. don't buy from loblaws. longo's has it cheaper. if you know of any other cheaper places to buy mascarpone, let me know!

28/365: nutella love + list #1: a list of things that used to excite me when i was a kid

happy monday! how was your weekend? i have been somewhat amiss with my blogging and meant to do this yesterday! i visited rebecca's blog and found a nice list of things that used to excite her when she was younger! i thought it would be a good idea to make a list too.

so without further ado, things that used to excite me when i was younger:

  • pool parties
  • walking down the toy aisles
  • fireworks on new year's eve
  • family parties
  • drinking pop (soda- we were only allowed to drink coke at parties!)
  • friday night line up of batman, x-men, are you afraid of the dark?
  • 10-hour family roadtrips
  • presents from my godfather who lived in germany and malaysia. the best one was a matryoshka doll (it saddens me that i no longer have it!)
  • writing and acting out skits in grade school
  • mr. squiggle, play school, sesame street
  • sappy mexican soap operas/telenovelas that we used to watch in secret: marimar, maria mercedes (the nannies let us watch them!)
  • barbie dolls
  • hello kitty stationary
  • stamps
  • stickers and sticker books (esp. felt, shiny, or scratch and smell, lisa frank stickers)
  • cross-stitching
  • buying dmc skeins and embroidery loops
  • starting a new pattern
  • home ec class (we started at a really young age - grade 2!)
  • blue kool aid
  • cheese stuffed hotdogs
  • breakfast at mcdonald's
  • sonic on sega
  • mario brothers and duck hunt on nintendo
  • school supply shopping
  • tea sets and kitchen toys
  • little tikes
  • tonkatsu and tempura
  • goosebumps, sweet valley and nancy drew books
  • jem
  • school socks trimmed with lace
  • french braids

what's yours? what used to excite you when you were younger?

my next list will probably be things that get me excited presently. nutella for sure will be one of them. especially when it's on sale. :)

getting ready for lots of making.

hello hello!
i'm having a good morning so far, how is yours?
i think it's because...
* i had a great night in last night! monday evenings, my best friend usually comes over. we have dinner together, and she does her school work (she is in teacher's college) and i do my crafting, with the promise that i will not talk to her (which is difficult sometimes because there's just so much to say and she and i talk a lot. haha). BUT nothing tops having your best friend over and just standing by the counter eating nutella and ice cream right out of the box. she literally made an ice cream sandwich- nutella and ice cream inside this really yummy soft bun. sigh. love you, A.
* it's finally cold enough to wear gloves and a hat, and cold enough to stuff my pants into my boots. harhar.
* and it's really quiet here in the office...i like it that way in the mornings. unless it's a friday afternoon. or when i'm overtiming. then my co-workers and i would belt out queen, madonna & celine dion songs (celine dion songs is one of my guilty pleasures, i have to admit).

on a craftier note, i've started buying supplies and fabric for christmas presents! yeah!

i got these from etsy!

these are sold at the workroom.

i'm thinking of making:

coin purses
little sets of gifts tags/tiny christmas cards
little patchwork pouches
more turd guys/softies for the boys
neckties for men (if i'm able to take classes...i signed up for it but not sure if there's still any space left *crosses fingers*)
throw pillows
zippered pouches
padfol!os

i also have to begin work for the backtack swap.
my very talented swapping partner is kirsty.

hello kirsty! :)

here are a few things that i made last week:

i finally used the cloud fabric to make an envelope throw pillow case. the other pillow beside it is the VERY FIRST thing i've ever made on the sewing machine! it's funny, now that i look back on it, it took me more than an hour to make it. this time it took me 15 minutes to whip this up. measuring out a perfectly sized rectangle took forever though.

nadine, this is part 1 of benjamin's presents (john has the other part and will send it to you with this one). it has its imperfections though, i hope you don't mind! i'll make you a better one next time, but know that this is the first pouch i've ever made and you get to have it. :)

this was for an adorable little girl named jennifer.

and that is all.
i hope you guys have a great day!
and thank you for all your sweet comments...it's really, really nice to meet all of you!

packing and other things.

augh. kill me.
i hate packing.
i have to pack 3 years' accumulation of stuff. so far i have packed 1/8 of my room in two boxes. those are just my books. the real feat will be the the closet.

after much deliberation, i have decided that this will be the color scheme for my new room. inspired by peonies, tiffany boxes, my h&m layered top and the green club monaco shirred skirt.

no no. this is not a poser pic. it's the shirt that i made thursday night, which i've worn twice already.
two things: i really should hem (but too lazy to do so...i wish i owned a serger! that's next on my list after an ice cream maker) and ruffles are easy to make...i just need to remember to kno the threads...they're coming a bit undone now. but for a beginner shirt, not bad at all! i'll be sewing up another shirt and a skirt pretty soon.

it's taking me 15 minutes to dry my hair now...which means that my hair is growing out! woohoo...

yesterday i made some pouches at the workroom. this is one of them. i'm planning to make some as christmas presents.

sigh. i aspire to be karyn who makes her own ice cream. haha. i have yet to try the ice cream recipes in my nigella cookbook. my birthday's coming up, however...i can put that request in hehe.

yesterday was a lovely day. i had a spinach and cheese croissant and a cup of coffee. it was truly a la holly golightly/audrey, although she was having breakfast at tiffany's and i was having mine on a streetcar. afterwards i just walked along queen street west, perused the stores, but found nothing that i really liked. i did buy some new fabric and insane amounts of zippers and bias tape. i came home with things for john, but none for me, which is fine. i find that now that i've been sewing and thrifting, nothing really appeals to me anymore. i am dying to sew my own clothes from patterns.
anyhoo, it was nice to be by myself and not be in such a hurry. i had wanted to sit in a cafe and eat a nice plate of salad and nuts and cheese with fruit, but the weather wasn't very cooperative.
speaking of food, if one day you find yourself dessert-less, but with a box of vanilla ice cream, some bread and nutella and strawberry jam, you could do an improvised, deconstructed poor man's version of a napoleon:

1. toast bread.
2. butter bread.
3. flatten bread with a rolling pin or your hand if feeling lazy.
4. nutella the slices up.
5. jam up the other slices.
6. cut in squares.
7. layer them alternately .
8. top with creme glacee in vanille flavor.
as bizarre as it sounds, trust me, it's really good. it will definitely satisfy your craving for something sweet. this is definitely a melissa original...whowould'vethunk? bread and ice cream at the same time. haha.

my birthday wish list:
1. an ice cream maker
2. a cuisinart or kitchen aid mixer
3. a vintage typewriter
4. loads of vintage and japanese fabric
5. stamps and ink pads
6. antique perfume bottles
7. a bouquet of flowers
8. another class at the workroom
9. a serger
10. a chandelier for my room
11. sewing books and sewing patterns

anyhoo...must get on now with packing.
sitting amidst strewn clothes and papers and books gets exhausting after a while.

banana fana

i was quite productive today and now i'm struggling to stay that way. i still have two plays to read (not as boring as before. i prefer racine to corneille, but i'd rather not read them at all) and a film analysis to write. all before tuesday. augh. kill me.
i saw the last picture show for my film class and it was so depressing. i know that a movie has affected me when i bawl my eyes out and can't stop even way after the credits are done. but with this one, even though there were no tears involved, it left me with this sad and empty feeling.
anyhoo, so far today i've attended my inclass driving course (augh, from 10am t 2pm), did pilates and yoga and baked some...banana bread. hence the blog title. hehe.
it is proven that a few minutes in daylight can help prevent depression. baking or cooking or doing something really domestic (yes, even cleaning) can do the same for me.
so here are some banana muffins i made today, with two variations. i used a different recipe and i didn't like it at all. i find it too dry. i'm sticking to allrecipes.com next time. their recipe gave me a better and more moist bread.

this was from before. i topped it with bananas too.
and while it was still warm i topped it with vanilla ice cream. it's not just brownies that can get this kind of treatment! hehe. you can probably even use something caramel-y in flavor.

these are the ones i made today: banana muffin topped with white chocolate chips and banana muffins with nutella inside and on top.
i love nutella! i used it instead of icing. just take a big glop and slather it on top. it works like ready made duncan hines/betty crocker icing.
this was taken in rome...it was a creperie place just beside the vatican museum. look at that lovely display of nutella (well you'd be able to see it better if my camera wasn't crap. argh. or if i had zoomed it. argh.). the italians (and i) love their nutella.
for a sweet fix, just take vanilla ice cream and a dollop of nutella and swirl them around. it's much better than chocolate ice cream.

when feeling like crap...

- take a tablespoon of nutella and a chunk of bread and eat
- retail therapy, but only things on sale. or you'll feel worse afterwards
- drink a nice tall glass of icy diet coke
- watch food network. the perfect combo would be barefoot contessa, nigella, everday italian and jaime at home
- take a nap for hours and wake up at night only to take a shower and brush your teeth then go back to bed
- watch the beginning and end of breakfast at tiffany's

my brain according to brain age is 63 years old. no wonder my brain doesn't function at school anymore. they say that's what happens when we do something over and over again. sounds like my monotonous job.
